Asphalt or Bituman driveway in Perth? Which is Better?

Bitumen driveways are less suitable for Perth due to their vulnerability to the hot climate, cracking, higher maintenance demands, and reduced durability compared to asphalt. Bitumen is more prone to water damage and has a lower load-bearing capacity. In contrast, asphalt proves to be a superior choice, offering greater resilience, cost-effectiveness, and longevity, making it the preferred option for homeowners in Perth.

Is an Asphalt Surface Right For You?

Asphalt is an incredibly durable material, making it a perfect material for a driveway. It is also comparatively easy to construct and lay down as well as surprisingly affordable to maintain. It takes significantly less time to lay asphalt driveways and you can most of the time drive on it as soon as it is laid. As a flexible material compared to other roadway materials, it can be less prone to cracking over time. With an up to 20 years life span, an asphalt surface is the most cost-effective material compared to other finishes. Additionally, as an oil-based material, oil leaks are not as visible as they would be on another material so you don’t have to worry about oil stains on your driveway.

Why Build a New Asphalt Driveway?

Reliability

Asphalt is a very weather-resistant material and is ideal for low or high traffic conditions.

Environmentally Conscious

There’s approximately 20% less energy required to produce and construct compared to other paving materials. From production, laying the material through to recycling, to low consumption of energy, low emission of greenhouse gases along with the conservation of natural resources aids in making asphalt an environmentally conscious pavement choice.

Minimal Maintenance Required

Even though maintenance is required, asphalt does in general not require maintenance or repairs until years after the driveway was first installed. Repairs to these surfaces are often easier and cheaper compared to other paving materials.

Flexibility

Asphalt is the ideal material suitable for both light and heavy vehicles. You will find that installing an asphalt driveway is definitely a worthwhile investment that will definitely pay off.

Asphalt Driveway Before & After

Asphalt Driveways FAQs

Avoid walking and driving on your new driveway for 2-3 days. Also be mindful of common offenders like high heels, bicycle kickstands, ladders, and porch chairs. Greater care should also be exercised in hot Perth weather, such as on a hot summer day when the mercury reaches 37°C or above. This is particularly important for Perth driveways, where the temperatures are much higher.

Asphalt contains certain oils or volatiles to make it malleable. Until these oils evaporate, the blacktop will remain soft. This is referred to as the asphalt curing (or ageing) process and can take 6-12 months to fully cure. During this period, asphalt driveways can be more susceptible to damage.

Parking in the same spot on an uncured surface can cause dents where the wheels rest. This is particularly true in the case of a dig out where the base is fresh. No matter how thick the material, deep the base, or heavy the compaction, depressions, or “wheel dishes” may result if care is not exercised.

Power steering gouges may result and damage to your Perth driveway if not careful. Gouges are bruises or lacerations to the surface, caused by the kneading, grinding action of the tyres moving on the bias against the asphalt. This problem is most often encountered in L-shaped driveways, where the parking area sits at right angles to the driveway.

Avoid turning wheels sharply or while the car is not in motion. Even cars without power steering or lightweight sports or compacts will cause these marks. It’s also very important to not allow oil, petrol, or diesel to remain on the asphalt, clean up immediately to avoid long-term damage.

Asphalt is made up of various sizes of stone, sand, liquid asphalt, and other ingredients. Older mixes were coarser and more stable. Today’s mixes are much finer in response to increasing public demand for a “smooth” driveway.

While pleasing in appearance, the finer mixes have a greater tendency to shift under strain. Asphalt is not a hard, tight material, but a soft, porous one hence it is softer and more susceptible to marking.
